PCP improves lives by creating opportunities to improve the health, wellbeing and life chances of disadvantaged communities. The charity helps adults develop skills, build confidence and increase independence through purposeful work, social interaction and community engagement.
Getting involved
Throughout the day, our team took part in a variety of hands-on activities across the PCP site.
This included harvesting honey from PCP's beehives, ready to be sold in the charity's site store, and repainting an outbuilding ahead of winter, a job completed with support from PCP service users who joined in partway through the day.
Colleagues also helped make Christmas decorations from recycled books, moved materials to improve accessibility around the site, and supported the on-site café by serving refreshments to members of the public.
Working together
Peter Hart, Growth Hub Manager at PCP, said he hadn't expected the outbuilding to be finished within a single day. Thanks to the combined effort of colleagues and service users working together, the job was completed on schedule, ready for winter.
Peter Hart said: "Thank you to the team for all the effort they put in. The service users are all very pleased and appreciated the support you have given."
Tony Milner, who helped organise the day on behalf of UKSBS, said: "We had a brilliant day. Every one of us said what a great time we had. It was nice to give something back and get hands-on."
Alison Wilkinson, volunteer from UKSBS said: “I really enjoyed the experience. The service users and volunteers made us feel so welcome, and it was great to join in with their activities as well as our own tasks. Making the honey was a real highlight – and of course, we had to have a taste! It’s a wonderful place with lovely people, and working alongside service users with different disabilities made the day especially rewarding. I enjoyed it so much that I now know what I’d like to do when I retire! Thank you to PCP and UKSBS for giving us this opportunity.”

Supporting our local community
This volunteering day forms part of our ongoing commitment to supporting local communities and the charitable organisations that make a difference within them. UKSBS offers all employees three paid volunteering days each year, which colleagues can use individually or as a team to support a charity or cause of their choice.
We'd like to thank everyone at PCP for welcoming our team so warmly, and we look forward to continuing to support their work in the future.
